chocolate pinnacle: max brenner's new place takes the treat to a new tier (link)
07.02.09 - philadelphia daily news - by howard gensler

scientific fact: chocolate is pretty much the best thing ever. my only complaint about it is that it isn't more easily worked into every single food experience, but in nyc, there's a place that's trying to make that dream a reality--max brenner chocolate bar & restaurant. there are two locales here & i went to one of them a few years back for a random bday party. i had the bagel with melted chocolate & peanut butter. it was pretty tame compared to the rest of the stuff on the menu, but it still rocked my face.

brenner's now opened up his first philadelphia restaurant & according to the philadelphia daily news' howard gensler, it's just the next step in his success story. that story "began with a small chocolate shop in israel 13 years ago. a man from australia came into the store, went nuts for brenner's handmade chocolates and offered him the chance to expand to the other side of the world." now there are locations in australia, singapore, the phillipines, israel & the u.s...a friggin' chocalicious empire. the new one in philly is in the rittenhouse sq area pf philly. trendy! the perfect area for brenner's mission--"developing a chocolate culture." philly could use more chocolate culture.

since max brenner's basically obsessed with chocolate & that's the theme of the place, a majority of the items on the menu are made with chocolate. as the article mentions, there are drinks like the chocolate disco cocktail & the suckao--a drink "in which you concoct your own warmth by mixing milk and chocolate over a burning candle." there are breakfast dishes like the aforementioned bagel & the chocolate chocolate chocolate pancakes. there are dinner items like vidalia onion rings with a dark chocolate ranch dipping sauce & the chocolate pizza. when it's time for dessert, they've obviously got you covered as well.

you'd think all that chocolate might be bad for you, but as brenner is quoted as saying, "my grandfather lived to 98 and every day he downed a shot of whiskey and ate chocolate. happiness and fun are the key for health, and chocolate makes it happy." clearly, brennan is obsessed.  it could be worse though.  at least he's obsessed with chocolate & not mariah carey.

#106 - ready for my closeup.

back in the mid-nineties, i spent four years of my life & $100K in pursuit of a coveted boston university film degree. as previously noted, other than writing a handful of unproduced feature-length scripts in the late nineties, i've put the film portion of that degree to little use. the only time it led to the creation of an actual film was in 2003, when i documented a cross-country trip a friend & i took to yellowstone for a week of backcountry hiking & camping.

about two-and-a-half years ago, almost ten years after graduating, i found myself on a film set for the first time. i had moved back to nyc a few months earlier & was living the totally glamorous, totally bohemian no-apartment, no-job lifestyle & as such, had a lot of free time on my hands. a friend who i'd met through my girlfriend at the time was acting as producer on a short film & they needed somebody to drive one of the vans that transported the crew from union sq down to one of the sets, a school in new brunswick, nj. other than missing the holland tunnel one night & having to drive through an extra 30-45 minutes of traffic to the lincoln tunnel, i did a fairly good job. in fact, nobody died on my watch.

since my main job was basically two hours of driving to the set & two hours driving from the set with a full day of waiting on the set sandwiched in between, i finished a hell of a lot of crosswords but also provided random assistance here & there. i helped carry in gear, hung a few signs around the building to direct cast members to the appropriate rooms & given my food expertise, was obviously a part of setting up craft services/catering. in addition, since i still get carded for cigarettes & lottery tickets & whatnot and the plot revolved around a high school teacher & a few of her students, i filled in as an extra, playing the part of a high school student. basically, along with a number of extras who were actually high school students, i was tasked with hanging out in the background & reacting to stuff.

my big break came during a scene where the teacher (played by leslie lyles, who also played andy kaufman's mother in man on the moon) was selling fundraiser candy to another teacher (played by eric christie). they conversed for a bit over the candy transaction & then he stepped away & i stepped forward & uttered my one line--"hershey bar, please." this past wednesday, the film--LANDLOCKED--had its first set of screenings & my one line made the cut & was right up there on the screen for all to see. i might be slightly biased, but i really believed that i wanted that hershey bar...& i'm now four degrees away from kevin bacon. leslie lyles was in man on the moon with jim carrey, who was in the truman show with laura linney, who was in mystic river with kevin bacon.

#106 - ready for my closeup.
snack: hershey's mini milk chocolate bars
drink: heineken from a mini keg

along with the screenings, there was a reception that featured an array of tasty wines & beers & cheeses & whatnot. there was even a cake shaped like the state of oklahoma (where the film is set). since the plot largely revolved around the teacher trying to raise money for a class trip by selling candy, there were mini candies sprinkled throughout the reception area. given my on-screen preference, i made sure to make quick work of a few hershey's mini milk chocolate bars during the reception.

recently, i've become somewhat of a chocolate snob, opting for dark chocolate most of the time. regardless, there's always something satisfyingly comforting about hershey's bars. they take me back to my childhood, a time when the parow clan filed into a rented minivan & took a summertime excursion down to hershey park, the most chocolate-themed amusement park on earth. unfortunately, that memory doesn't consist of any actual events from that trip, although i assume that some chocolate was consumed at some point & we probably went on some rides & i probably punched my sister and/or brother at least once.

as part of the reception spread, there was a mini keg of heineken. since i was feeling celebratory & i'm a total lush, i had myself a few classy plastic cups of that along with the chocolate bars. even though it's the world's most popular lager, the best part about the heineken is definitely not its bitter ass taste. it's the adventure that accompanies pouring it from that cute lil keg into a small plastic cup, a task that i discovered is not as easy as it appears to be.

the mini keg is dutch engineering at its finest. for starters, the "tap" extends out from the top of the keg at a 90-degree angle, which, if you're not careful, leads to the beer shooting out of the keg, clear past your waiting plastic cup. luckily, the fancy spread included napkins, which i put to good use. on top of that, the mini keg produces a lot of foam, a development which is fine when it involves tasty beer, but not when it involves heineken. if i have to wait five minutes for my beer, it damn well better be a guinness or a boddingtons or some such draught beer. sure i could be a total heathen & like my friend who i was getting my beer with, swirl a finger covered in nose grease into the foam to speed up the process, but i'd much rather not. it might be fine for her, since she's not a film star like me, but i now have a reputation to uphold & a film star would never do such a thing.  that's not to say that i didn't stick my finger in the foam...i just didn't cover it with nose grease before doing so.

#102 - friday night shenanigans.

this past friday, i was relaxing around the apartment post-work & got a phone call from my pal mike weber. i know mike from back in my days at ny press, where i was an ad sales dude & he was an illustrator & eventually, the art director. his ny press cartoons were always densely amazing, but the moment he's infamous for is when his draft cover of the paper, with the placeholder headline "joes blows fucky fuckball" accidentally went to press, prompting a massive half-assed attempt at a recall by the publishers. we hang out fairly often these days & recently he's created the "interactive social contract," a "user generated database of philosophy and law." basically, you create laws & the community-at-large votes them up or down. the interface/navigation on the site is pretty damn awesome.

mike's one of those outgoing, gregarious types, someone i definitely enjoy hanging out with (except for during his EXTREMELY belligerent moments), as he makes friends with folks wherever he goes, which provides a nice complement to my initial shyness & recent introverted nature towards people. i have a vivid memory from a few years back of exiting a bar to join him for a smoke & finding him outside, already chatting with two cute girls.  as i stepped outside, he remarked, "shawn, i've found us wives." that definitely broke the ice. we've been trying to perfect the making friends & meeting fine ladies team technique for a while now (i've been extra introverted until recently), but i think we finally got it down on friday.

...so after not hanging out for a little while, he just got a new phone & new bike, so decided to make his way down to park slope for some almost-summer drinking fun on the neighborhood's bar patios. our first stop was at commonwealth, home of the best jukebox in all of brooklyn. people are friendly there, but are often engrossed in the group of friends they come with. we didn't make any friends on the patio, but did spend a little bit inside chatting with three sisters, two of who were cute twins. mike got one of their numbers & when we were leaving, we got in a conversation with a girl out front, who mike exchanged numbers with. future park slope hanging out buddies?

after a few drinks there, we made our way down the street to the gate, one of the neighborhood's best locales for both tasty beers & a decent crop of attractive & interesting park slopers, who fill the patio during the warmer months. we never made it out to the patio, as mike struck up a conversation with two girls near the bar. they were cool, but after a while of chatting, one was tired & although she toughed it out for a while, they eventually they took off...& mike got one of their numbers. more future park slope hanging out buddies? we'll see. if so, it's already shaping up to be a pretty fun summer.

#102 - friday night shenanigans.
snack: valor dark chocolate with orange
drink: oskar blues brewing mama's little yella pils

when mike first showed up to my apartment, we were just going to head straight out to the bars, but there were only five minutes left in game seven of the pittsburgh-detroit stanley cup final & i was engrossed, so i ran downstairs to let him in & we headed back up to watch the rest of the game. i only had one beer left in my fridge, so we split that & finished what was left of a bar of valor dark chocolate with orange. valor is a spanish company who, if their website is any indication, enjoys loops of soothing spanish guitar.  who doesn't though?

mike & i both had the same reaction to the valor bar. it has an odd gumminess to it, due to the gelatinous orange pieces sprinkled throughout the bar.  luckily, we both enjoyed the gumminess & the dark chocolate.  personally, i enjoy it when the fruit's that prevalent in the mix.  anyway, it made for a nice, quick snack while we watched the last few minutes of the game.

i poured that only beer--a oskar blues brewing mama's little yella pils--into glasses & we split that as we watched the red wings lose the stanley cup to the pens.  oskar blues is a colorado based company that makes a solid series of canned beers & out of the ones i've tried, my favorite is the dale's pale ale. on top of being the tastiest canned beer i've ever had (sorry, guinness), it's part of a specific positive brooklyn backyard cookout experience from a few summers back...& it's hard to top nostalgia when it comes to choosing a beer.

as for the mama's little yella pils, it has more flavor than most pilsners, which are often essentially malty water.  the only drawback was that it was so light & smooth-drinking that we were both done with our respective six ounces within a matter of minutes, even before the hockey game ended.  as such, we had to spend a good five minutes sitting there on a friday night without a beer.  it's not something i'm proud of.  on the other hand, our meeting people teamwork from that evening...now that's something to be proud of...meeting people is easy!

#94 - believe it or not!

sixty years ago today, the world lost one of its great cartoonist/anthropologist/oddity enthusiasts when mr robert ripley, the creator of ripley's believe it or not, passed away. during the recording of the thirteenth episode (freaky!) of the first incarnation of his tv show--an episode about death (spooky!)--he passed out & was soon dead of a heart attack. during his life, he started as a cartoonist & through it, became a curious world traveler, had a long-running radio show & iconic tv show and launched a now well-known international brand.

the ripley franchise is still alive & kicking. after ripley's death, the tv show returned in 1982 with jack palance (creepy!) as the host. it lasted for over four years before going off the air & was later revived in 2000, with the awful dean cain as the host. that lasted almost as long as the previous incarnation. the cartoon is still going, syndicated in over 200 papers worldwide. in fact, today's is about a fish called "danionella dracula!" believe it or not!

ripley's also has thirty-five ripley's believe it or not "odditoriums" all over the world, allowing tourists to connect with crazy crap. the first odditorium opened in chicago in 1933 (great depression be damned!) & nowadays, there's even one in kuwait. believe it or not! there's one here in nyc, right in times sq, a few buildings down from my office, but that'd involve mingling with tourists & the tickets are friggin' $26.95! believe it or not!

jim carrey's attached to do a film about ripley's life. tim burton was originally attached to direct, which would have basically guaranteed awesomeness, but he's since moved on & it looks like chris columbus has taken over. i liked his work with the nina, pinta & santa maria. also with goonies & gremilns. jim carrey's been good before, so if it finally gets made, there's a chance it'll be a pretty sweet movie, especially since according to the bio right there on the ripley website, robert ripley was "a notorious ladies man, at times housing up to five or more live-in girlfriends at a time." believe it or not!

snack: hershey's dark chocolate with pomegranate
drink: pepsi throwback

tonight's snack of choice is a bar of hershey's dark chocolate with pomegranate. apparently, you can put pomegranate in anything. you can also--if you're hershey's--create a pomegranate flavor by combining the juices of pomegranates, cranberries, apple juice, pineapple & elderberries, forming them into non-descript chewy pieces & cramming them into a dark chocolate bar.

it has a strong fruit smell to it. nothing disgusting...just very noticeable. the flavor's pretty good, but since i'll essentially eat anything with dark chocolate & fruit or fruitesque substances, that's not saying much.

in honor of the old-timey feel that seems to permeate the ripley's franchise, we're jumping in the ol' wayback machine for tonight's beverage--a pepsi throwback. it's made with pepsi's retro formula, where they take out the evil HFCS & replace it with natural sugar, just like they used to do back in the sixties & seventies. it's perfectly positioned for a big summer marketing campaign.

it's only around for a limited time, which is a shame. it tastes way better than the current pepsi formula & it's better for you, so it makes no sense for them to go back to the HFCS, but they will. as a friend recently explained to me, she just discovered something interesting about coca-cola in germany...they don't use HFCS in it. lucky for us here in the U.S., corn farm subsidies are huge, so we can pump out all the HFCS our pop-guzzling hearts desire.

until they discontinue the pepsi throwback formula, you can enjoy the retro taste & as a bonus, also enjoy their...um...retro internet site. it's totally out of sight & has far out features like throwback blog wallpapers & twitter page backgrounds. can you dig it? it has a jive talk dictionary, which i'm obviously already putting to good use. there's also a video page, full of dy-no-mite! commercials like this one featuring a pepsi throwback & a fondue pot:

i saw that i was all "what the fuck was that?" it's so unbelievable. anyway, i'll catch all you jive turkeys on the flip side...gotta go get my groove on.

vancouver mayor pays up after lost hockey bet to chicago counterpart (link)
05.14.09 - vancouver sun - by gerry bellett

yesterday was a sad day for my hometown boston bruins, as they exited the playoffs after losing to the carolina hurricanes in game 7, in overtime, with the winning goal scored by the same guy who had sucker punched a bruins player just two games earlier, possibly breaking a bone in his face. on monday night, the vancouver canucks suffered a similar fate, as they were bounced from the playoffs by the chicago blackhawks, 7-5.

as gerry bellett reports, yesterday, his hometown mayor--gregor robertson--made good on a bet he had with chicago mayor richard m. daley, where the mayor of the losing city had to send a package of local food & drink to the mayor of the winning city. robertson shipped daley "cases of beer from molson’s, granville island brewery and storm brewing; musqueam first nations smoked salmon; dried morel mushrooms from pacific rim mushrooms; chocolates from bad girl and purdy’s; que pasa hand-cut organic tortilla chips; vegetarian blueberry sauce from thai princess and a couple of cartons of the mayor’s own happy planet fruit juices." HOLY CRAP. you can leave that molson's junk up in canada, but i would eat the hell out of everything else in that gift bag. daley's sending robertson a consolation prize--chicago beer & sausages.  sorry chicago, but i'd much rather have the vancouver stuff.

it makes me chuckle a little bit. to an outsider like myself, robertson & daley seem to be from two completely different planets. robertson presides over the most marijuana friendly city in canada, gets to oversee the city during the 2010 olympic games & is the co-founder of happy planet, an organic food & drink company. daley is chicago irish & the son of the notorious richard daley. he's also a year-and-a-half away from beating his father out of the title of longest-serving mayor in chicago history. he's trying to get the 2016 olympic games, may be the most powerful mayor in the country & is definitely no stranger to controversy...a totally different planet--the daley planet.
